'97 Exp 4.0SOHC, 5R55e Doing an engine swap - old motor was froze so converter was pulled with engine. Trying to install converter on the shaft and will not go in the last inch or so - measured 1-5/8' from engine to end of flex plate, and just over 1 inch from bell housing to TC pads.

Ford rebuilt torque converter

The torque converter on a General Motors 4L60E automatic transmission is an essential link between the engine and driveline. The torque converter uses fan blades in a sealed case to create a fluid coupling that transfers power from the engine to the transmission. Installation of a torque converter is a simple, step-by-step process that can be completed in under an hour.

Step 1

Use a funnel to fill the torque converter with one quart of automatic transmission fluid.

Step 2

  1. We have over lots of customer reviews on Ford Torque Converter to help you find exactly what you need. We work hard to build a great website for car parts, so start perusing and see what you find. If you know your Year Make Model, put it in the selector so that we can guide you to a product that fits your vehicle.
  2. It also doesn't hurt to fill it, but filling it does nothing to help the converter. Once the trans is installed the converter will start filling as soon as the engine starts to crank. Ford builds millions of automatic transmissions each year. They all have torque converters. None of these converters are filled before they are installed.

Slide the torque converter onto the input shaft of the transmission. Turn the converter left and right as you push it onto the shaft to make sure the converter engages the lockup shaft, input shaft, and front pump. You should hear three distinct clicks as each is engaged.

Step 3

Install the torque converter to the flywheel bolts, but do not tighten. Be sure to use grade eight bolts.

Step 4

Measure the distance from the flywheel to the converter. The distance should be no less than 1/8 inch and no more than 3/16 inch.

Torque the converter to flywheel bolts to 46 foot-pounds.
